Skin is the body’s largest organ, and can absorb up to 80% of what is put onto it. Since everybody’s skin is different, there are many different types of makeup out there, which range from makeups moisturizers for oily skin, dry skin, and sensitive skin. However, some of these makeups can cause acne or can even worsen acne in certain types of skin. This is due to the chemically induced plugging of the pilosebaceous glands, which secretes an oily/waxy matter called sebum, which the body uses to lubricate the skin and hair of people. These are mostly located on the face and scalp although they are located all over the skin except the palms and soles. Clogging of the pilosebaceous glands causes them to produce too much oily/waxy sebum. This oily sebum is then mixed with dead skin cells that cause acne-causing bacteria to form. After that, you are putting on more makeup, which contains oil, which causes acne. Normally the pilosebaceous glands produce sebum, but clogging the pilosebaceous glands causes them to increase production of sebum, which increases the chances of constipation and acne.
Non-comedogenic makeups are now being produced which reduce clogging of the pilosebaceous glands. Some of the ingredients used in makeups that cause acne are not even FDA approved. Some of these makeups include; mineral makeups, hyper organic makeups, and fragrance free makeups. These do not include the chemical that causes clogging of the pilosebaceous glands. Since it does not cause clogging, there is a normal amount of sebum, which is okay because it hydrates the skin and keeps moisture inside of the skin. If you do not have sebum producing glands, your skin would dry out in a small amount of time.
If you are using non-comedogenic makeup and you still have acne, you can either try to cleanse your skin with non-comedogenic cleansers such as facial scrubs. You can also try washing your hands, exfoliating your skin, washing, and then moisturizing. Using that approach will remove the dirt and oils on your hands, and then get rid of the top layer of dead skin protecting the bacteria that cause acne. Then, when you wash your skin with a non-comedogenic facial scrub, you’re getting rid of the acne-causing bacteria. After exfoliating and washing your skin, you should moisturize your skin with a lotion or moisturizer.
There is no specific brand of facial cleanser or specific one that suits everybody skin. This is because our skin is different, and the requirements are completely different. If a skin or facial cleanser that is made for oily skin, but is used for sensitive skin, you’ll dry out your skin, which will cause more acne.
